A Better Ten Commandments
By Gene Johns

In the Bible, God gave Moses Ten Commandments (twice). After displaying some anger management problems, Moses destroyed the first set. Fortunately for mankind, God gave Moses another tablet with the Ten Commandments from God.

The Bible says God himself inscribed the Ten Commandments onto stone tablets with his finger. I bet it was not easy for Moses to find the right size and shape of stone tablets for him to carry down the mountainside. The next time I go on a scavenger hunt I'm calling upon the ghost of Moses for help.

Below are the instructions from God on how to live your life:

God's Ten Commandments

01. Thou shall have no other gods before Me.

02. Thou shall make no idols.

03. Thou shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.

04. Keep the Sabbath day holy.

05. Honor your father and your mother.

06. Thou shall not murder.

07. Thou shall not commit adultery.

08. Thou shall not steal.

09. Thou shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

10. Thou shall not covet.

The first four commandments of the ten commandments are about God himself. Those first four commandments are not particularly helpful in day-to-day life and perhaps indicate God is an egomaniac.

Commandments five through nine are practical and worthy of making the top ten commandments for living. Although, one must ask about number nine. Does that mean one can bear false witness against those who aren't your neighbor? That needs a little more work.

Finally, there is commandment ten, thou shall not covet. This is an attempt to control the thoughts of humans for coveting is a mental process where one formulates things desired. If it does not involve stealing (commandment eight) then desire is a good thing. Desire is what motivates us to work at obtaining what we want. It is how we improve our lives.

After giving it some thought, I came up with what I believe would have been a better set of commandments for mankind.

A Better Ten Commandments

01. Thou shall not commit murder.

02. Thou shall not commit rape.

03. Thou shall not own another person as property.

04. Thou shall not be verbally or physically abusive to anyone.

05. Thou shall not steal.

06. Thou shall not smoke any substance or material.

07. Thou shall not build a home in a known flood zone.

08. Thou shall bathe and brush your teeth at least once a day.

09. Thou shall wash your hands before eating or before preparing

       food for others.

10. Thou shall not abuse animals.
